Life was different 10 years ago in all aspects. If you wanted to watch any movie a decade ago, you had to go to the theatres, wait for the movie to be telecasted on TV on an occasional day, or buy a DVD. Things have changed for good in the past couple of years. We watch more content on the OTT platforms these days than on the Theatres or TVs.
More than 60 per cent of OTT viewers watch movies on their mobile devices. If you are a Netflix user among them, you enjoy the privilege of watching it in the best quality possible. It is because Netflix works at its best when you use its native apps on a compatible smartphone.
For Windows PC and Mac users, Netflix videos get displayed in the best quality only when the titles are watched on the OS-native Microsoft Edge and Safari browsers. It is because Microsoft and Apple use the Hardware-based DRM system, and Netflix works fine in this system. On the other hand, browsers like Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome use the software-based DRM system, and Netflix usually restricts the video quality to 720p on these browsers.
It doesn’t matter if you have a premium Ultra HD plan; the maximum resolution you can still get on Google Chrome is 720p. When I was using only Windows OS, I enjoyed watching Netflix in the best quality using the Microsoft Edge browser. However, it was tough for me when I switched to Ubuntu OS. Unlike Apple’s Mac or Microsoft’s Windows, Ubuntu offers only Firefox by default to the users.
I installed Google Chrome later on Ubuntu. But Netflix wasn’t working well in both Firefox and Google Chrome on the Ubuntu OS. The video quality was always stuck at 720p (1280×720) resolution. If you are wondering how I have checked the resolution, let me tell you that I did so by clicking CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+Q keys simultaneously to view the technical stats of the Netflix video.
Thanks to the dual-booting system, since my laptop has both Ubuntu and Windows, I log in to Windows OS and watch Netflix shows on the Microsoft Edge browser. I started getting more familiar with Ubuntu gradually, and I wouldn’t say I liked logging into Windows eventually.
But after so much research by going through so many YouTube videos and blogs, I found a way finally that works on Google Chrome and Firefox. You will have to install a chrome extension for Google Chrome and Add-in on the Firefox browser.
